doulton of lambeth " harvest " jugs were made in the late 19th and early 20th century and imitated the style of traditional english brown stoneware pitchers of the 17th & 18th century . the stoneware salt glaze jug is decorated with applied sprigs, low relief incised moulded clay embelishments, in this case rural scenes inspired by 17th century designs, consisting of a windmill, an oak tree within a picket fence enclosure, a family scene with a mother surrounded by children, feeding one of them with a spoon and a man drinking from a jug with a sleeping hog beside him, a portly gentleman astride a wooden barrel with a tankard of foaming ale in one hand and a clay tobacco pipe in the other, a tavern scene with a man sitting at a table with a barrel and a bowl on it and a four pointed stag outwitting 7 hounds and a bugle blowing huntsman on horseback.
