a very early modernist vase by dennis townsend ( b. 1933 ) one of the most respected rye potters. signed and dated on the base 1949. dennis townsend was first apprenticed to rye pottery in 1947, on completion of his training he left to fullfill his national service obligation. dennis returned to rye pottery only to find limited work due to an over supply of qualified potters, so he left to form iden pottery which gained an excellent reputation for quality stoneware.
