nestled by the tree-lined river medway near aylesford Kent is the principal house of the carmelite religious order that came to Kent in 1242. the friars and the carmelites of aylesford were forced from their priory in 1538 only to return 400 years later in 1949 .it was at this time fr malachite Lynch began a restoration of the friars. in 1955 david leach was employed to start up a pottery. David Leach was the son of the famous bernard leach who introduced japanese stoneware pottery and techniques to the west. david leach left aylesford pottery in 1958 after a brief overlap with colin pearson who then took over the running of the pottery. colin pearson was another extremely well-respected potter who introduced innovations in design, he was known for rejecting traditional methods of working and producing work with great sculptural presence.
