a limited edition shell mosaic designed to capture the sentiment of a victorian sailors valentine. this craftsman made mosaic dates from the late 1990's and was designed and produced by the high end interior furnishing company " authentic models " established in holland in 1964.
a charming late 20th century shell mosaic, sailors valentine, made in the traditional style of a victorian sailors valentines of the caribbean. the shells have been arranged to form a heart set between compass points. the design is housed in a polished aged walnut finish hardwood octagonal frame. the valentine can be wall hung using the fitted brass ring.
sailors valentines, originally made in the caribbean during the 19th century, were purchased by visiting sailors to take home as love tokens. often the commissioned artist would incorporate a sentimental message, such as " forget me not ," "my love "or "be mine," popular designs would incorporate flowers and hearts, for this reason they became known over time as sailors valentines.
