the portrait, a drawing in charcoal is believed to be of Barbara Joy Weekley to celebrate her 21st Birthday. Barbara's mother's maiden name was Emma Maria Frieda Johanna Freiin ( Baroness ) Richthofen. Emma married the language professor Ernest Weekly in 1899 and had 3 children including Barbara. In 1912 Emma fell in love with a former student of her husband...D.H. Lawrence and ran away to Germany. In 1914 after her divorce Emma and Lawrence married . Lawrence going on to receive notoriety as an author, one of his most famous novels being Lady Chatterleys Lover.
the portrait is by Reginald Grenville Eves R.A (24 May 1876 – 13 June 1941). eves studied art at the slade school. he exhibited in Paris several times winning a silver medal in 1924, going on to win gold in 1926 at the Paris salon. he was elected as an associate of the royal academy in 1933 and a royal academian in 1939. eves established a successful society portrait practice in London, his subjects included many cultural, political and military figures, in particular during the early years of ww2 as an official war artist. his many sitters included Thomas hardy Sir ernest shackelton, George vi, and sir max beehrbohm, to name but a few. his work forms part of the collections at the Tate and national portrait gallery.
