a well made 19th century sailor made carved hardwood whaler. the hull has been carved with accurate lines and attention detail, almost what you might expect from a boat builders model. the whaler has a carefully carved rudder with yoke tiller, a design with several advantages over a traditional tiller. first, the lines attached to the yoke always work the same way on any tack, you pull the rope on the side you wish to steer towards which is the opposite of a standard tiller. second, you can lengthen the steering lines and steer the boat from nearly anywhere they can reach. this allows you to put your weight where it will do the most good, an important factor when fishing or when rigged for sail. the boat sits on what appears to be an original stand. the boat shows a small area of historical damage on the rail just aft of the bow on the left.
