Alan Brough was born in wilmslow , Cheshire,in 1924, he was the son of the distinguished sculptor also named alan brough. he studied at camberwell school of art, London, between 1946 and 1950. on graduating Alan became a potter. in 1956 he started deacon pottery in central London. by 1968 his reputation was such, that he was asked to take over the teaching at the leach pottery st.ives, Cornwall by bill Marshall who was having to dedicate more time to help the aged bernard leach throwing pots. he credits janet darnell lEACH and bernard leach with much of his later learning about the art and techniques of pottery-making, although the foundation and appreciation of the importance of clay and its fundamental uses in history - domestically, artistically and even technologically - was absorbed early from his father and upbringing in a creative family environment. Alan Brough stayed at the leach pottery for 4 years before setting up his own pottery near the harbour in newlyn Cornwall.
