a collection of three blue and white transfer patterned 19th century qing dynasty stoneware ginger jars.
the ginger jar first originated in china in around 221-207bc as a means for storing spices ranging from salt to more specialised herbs and spices, including ginger. these jars became an essential means of both storing and transporting herbs and spices, and as a consequence when ginger became a chief export to the western world, the vessels became known as ‘ginger’ jars. a disposable lid would have originally been used to seal the jars.
