the sketch is possibly a preparatory drawing for an etching entitled charlotte, a copy of which is held in the british museum.
henry potter stevens an accomplished etcher and watercolorist read chemistry at oxford university where he obtained a first class degree in 1896. he exhibited at the royal academy, grovesnor, redfern and colnaghi galleries. he lived in london and latterly eccles in suffolk. he was a keen collector and authority on japanese and chinese art.
